Terra Mongolia. About fishing in Western Mongolia
The first two forms do not interest us, and they are not caught in sports equipment. Ottomans of the fish-eating form are the largest representatives of the genus, and catching a large ottoman on a spinner is very exciting.
In some large lakes they reach a length of 1 meter. The usual sizes of an adult ottoman predator are 60-80 cm and weight is 3-4 kg.
Altai Ottoman spawning begins 1-2 weeks after the ice melts, usually in early May, continues to feed during spawning.
Mongolian grayling (family of grayling). THYMALLUS BREVIROSTRIS
Mongolian grayling is endemic to Mongolia and the largest of all graylings. Adult individuals (about 8-10 years old) reach a length of 60 cm and a weight of up to 2 kg. Mongolian grayling eats year-round, but is especially intense in the summer. The meat of the Mongolian grayling in its nutritional and taste characteristics can be attributed to high-quality food products, and in freshly salted form – to a special delicacy. Grayling, like mountain trout, is a recognized object of sport fishing. Catch grayling for fishing rod, spinning on a spinner, fly fishing. Spawning can take place from early April to mid-May, and this depends on the temperature of spring.
Siberian grayling is also in the Mongolian Altai. Irkutsk ichthyologists opened our eyes to this fact. At first glance, they determined the “surname” of the caught fish. Little was clear to us, however, the main sign of difference is the shape of the lower jaw.
Take a look at the “mustache” of these fish – they are different. The mustache on the left, like Chapaev, means Russian, Siberian grayling. On the right, the mustache looks down, like Genghis Khan’s Mongolian grayling.
Grayling is a very difficult object for fishing. He is careful, fast and strong. The art of hooking fish is sure to come in handy. And the larger the grayling, the harder it is to catch.
Equipment and gear
We provide equipment: double tents, sleeping mats, campfire and kitchen equipment, dishes, MNEV inflatable boat, oars, life jackets.
We have sleeping bags, but time has shown that most of you prefer to have your own sleeping bag.
Recommended personal equipment and clothing: high boots or boots, a windproof jacket or suit, a small sharp knife, a canvas shoulder bag for catch, a box for reels and tackle, sunglasses.
Usually we avoid places where mosquitoes annoy, but fishing is a completely different matter, and therefore it is better to have a little repellent. Grab 200-500 grams of salt for salting and preserving the catch. Salt must be large and non-iodized.
And do not forget the camera – without it, no one will believe in the size of the trophy you caught, and large copies are more difficult to keep.
Spinning with inertialess reel and fishing line 0.3-0.35mm. under the weight of the spinner 10-20 grams. for catching grayling. Braided cord, fishing line 0.4-0.45 mm. and spinners weighing 20-40 grams will be needed for the production of trophy-sized grayling and a large ottoman. The spinning rod should be of medium stiffness, because sometimes you have to hook the fish and pierce your lips with a sharp movement. Spinner for grayling – white and yellow spinners of the Meps type, number 2-3. For experiments and the search for a large grayling, you can try white-red oscillations weighing 20-40 grams.
Sometimes wobblers 6-10 cm long show themselves well. White-red colors.
For spinning, grayling takes both a fly and a spinner. The average weight is 1 kg. No creeping reptiles for all the time of our trip was not met. Neither scorpions (they say there are, but very few), nor snakes, nor vile ones. Ice from the lake this year came down on June 15.
We recommend reading the article “A Word About Grayling”, where the topic of grayling is described in detail.
The local population also fishes and the craftsmen of fishing are Kazakhs and Tuvans living in these places. Caught exclusively from the shore, because there are simply no boats. Mostly caught with a fishing rod, with an awkward piece of foam, instead of a float. The best bait is a grasshopper. On the lake they catch fish near the confluence of the stream. On the river in almost any place. In fairness, it should be said that in their catch grayling weighing no more than 1 kg. An interesting method of processing fish: the scales are not cleaned, but the skin is removed with a whole stocking.
Two words about Ottoman
As already mentioned, this is an endemic fish. That is, this species is not widespread and is found only in a limited habitat region. Outwardly, Ottoman is very similar to zander, but with a larger head. The color is from faint yellow to silver-white. It is noticed that large fish is almost always with white scales.
Rybakov upsets the “non-fighter” character of the Ottoman, when he takes the lure. But this is not a fact. Of course, the Ottoman for a long time does not understand what is happening to him, but if you hesitate with the cage, he can show his character and brazenly break already at the boat itself.
Osman is very bony and eating small fish makes it difficult for thin bone bones. However, in large osman these bones are easily removed.
